Description: This photography contest is open to all photographers who are 18 years of age or older. Photographs are accepted in the following categories: The Natural World; Travel; People; The American Experience; Altered Images; Mobile Photos; Sustainable Travel.

Additional Information: Judging will be conducted by the editors of Smithsonian and Smithsonian.com. The Smithsonian will select 10 finalists per category, a winner for each category, and a Grand Prize winner from the 70 finalists; except that the category sponsor United Airlines will participate in the final selection of the Sustainable Travel category winner, and a Readers' Choice winner will be selected from among the 70 finalists based on public voting. Winning photographs will be announced on Smithsonian.com in spring. All selected finalists will be notified of their status by March 2020 and will appear on the Smithsonian website in spring 2019. At that time, the public can vote on the website for one Readers' Choice winner from the 70 finalists. The Readers' Choice winner will be revealed online in spring 2020. Individuals affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, including employees, emeriti, Regents, trustees, interns, volunteers, fellows, research associates and their immediate families (children, siblings and spouses) and others living in their households are not eligible to enter this contest.

Award Amount: Cash prizes are awarded as follows: one grand prize, $2,500; six category winners, $500; one Readers' Choice, $500. There will also be an "Eco-Skies Sustainable Travel Leadership Award" given, which will consist of an electronic travel certificate for two economy round-trip tickets on flights operated by United to the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $28,000.

Entry information is available on the Smithsonian Magazine website. Students must complete an online entry form and upload their photographs to enter the contest. Each contestant may submit up to 15 photographs per category: The Natural World; Travel; People; The American Experience; Altered Images; Sustainable Travel. Photographs in any category taken with a phone or tablet may be considered in the Mobile Photos category. The applicant must indicate on the entry form that he/she wishes for his/her photo(s) to be considered in the Mobile Photos category. Photographs must have been shot by the entrant since Jan. 1, 2017. Photographs may be cropped; no other alteration is permitted except for those photographs entered in the Altered Images category. Photographs that have won any other contests are not eligible. High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable. Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible. Photographs must be in a .jpeg, .jpg or .gif format. Files submitted may not be larger than 5Mb. Please note: For a photo in which a person is recognizable, the applicant must secure a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject's parent or guardian and provide it to the Smithsonian upon request. A sample release form is available online at www.smithsonianmag.com/photocontest/rules/. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
