Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 15 awards offered annually. SPWP generally receives approximately 100 applications each year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a female.
  4. Must be a high school senior.
  5. Must be graduating from a high school in the Houston (TX) area (within a 55-mile radius of downton Houston).
  6. Must plan to attend a Texas college or university. Please note: If a recipient changes her mind and attends an out-of-state school, the scholarship money will be rescinded.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to female high school seniors who attend Houston (TX)-area high schools and plan to attend a Texas college or university. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must be available to attend an in-person interview in Houston if selected as a finalist.

Additional Information: Applicants are not required to major in any particular field. Applicants must not already have full scholarships or grants for tuition. Finalists will be invited to an interview by March 28, 2018. The interview is mandatory. Interviews will be held in Houston, Texas, on April 21, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Scholarship Committee looks for well-rounded candidates who excel in school and in their communities. Applicants should be active in extracurricular activities (math club, band, church groups, Habitat for Humanity, etc.) or with a job, and should write creative and engaging essays. SPWP will notify finalists of their scholarships via phone and email within two days of Interview Day. Recipients must email their college ID number, Social Security number, and college email address to SPWP within three weeks of award confirmation so that a tuition check can be sent to the recipient's university. The recipients are expected to attend the July Scholarship Breakfast in their honor and make a short speech (less than five minutes) about what receiving the scholarship means to them. If a recipient is out of town for the July meeting, they will be excused but must email their speech prior to the breakfast and attend at least one other SPWP event during the year. Recipients must provide the Scholarship Committee an update on their academic progress at the end of the semester after receiving the scholarship as well as a transcript to verify enrollment. Scholarship money will be rescinded if the recipient does not adhere to this agreement.

Award Amount: Scholarships generally range from $1,000 to $10,000 annually and are non-renewable. Scholarship awards are limited to cover tuition and fees only. Amounts awarded to successful candidates are at the discretion of the SPWP Scholarship Committee.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,500.

Applications are available online on the Society of Professional Women in Petroleum (SPWP) website. As part of the application, the student must submit a 500-word essay on one of the three topics listed on the SPWP website. In addition to a completed application, each student must submit the following materials: an SAT and/or ACT score report; a high school transcript; and a one-page resume. Application materials must be emailed to the address provided. Please note: The high school transcript must be emailed from the school; transcripts sent from applicant email addresses will not be accepted. The transcript may be mailed to the address provided if the school will not email transcripts. All applications must be submitted by noon CST on the deadline date.
