Number of Awards & Eligibility: Varies, all eligible applicants will be considered. Approximately 1,200 awards are disbursed each year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student at the time of application. Please note: Students must enter into the program within 5 years of high school graduation, or within 1 year of the student's release from active duty military service (if that release is within 5 years of the date of the student's high school graduation).
  4. Must be a resident of South Dakota at time of high school graduation.
  5. Must have an ACT score of 24 or higher or an SAT score of 1090 or higher.
  6. Must attend an eligible university, college, or technical school in South Dakota.
  7. Must complete a required high school course curriculum and obtain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  8. Must enroll full-time.

Description: This award is available for South Dakota residents who are planning to attend an eligible postsecondary institution in South Dakota. Students must have an ACT score of 24 or higher or an SAT score of 1090 or higher, and have completed a required high school curriculum with a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship is a state program, administered by the South Dakota Board of Regents, which provides merit based awards for academically accomplished high school graduates student who attends an eligible higher education institution in South Dakota. A list of participating institutions is available on the SDBOR website. Students seeking to establish initial eligibility after pursuing their post-secondary education out of state, transferring among participating institutions within the state, or have their eligibility reinstated after falling below the 3.0 cumulative GPA may also apply. Students should contact the financial aid office at participating institutions or visit the South Dakota Board of Regents website for additional information. Students must enter into the program within five years of high school graduation or within one year of release from active duty military service (if that release is within five years of the date of the student's high school graduation).

Award Amount: The award amount is for $6,500 over four years of undergraduate enrollment or until attaining a bachelor's degree. Recipients will receive $1,300 each year for the first three years of attendance. During the recipient's fourth year, he/she will receive $2,600. One half of the scholarship will be distributed at the beginning of the fall semester and at the beginning of the spring semester. Students must maintain consecutive enrollment with a cumulative 3.0 grade point average or higher and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of instruction per year to continue receiving awards.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,500.

Applications are available online on the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) website. To apply, students must complete the initial eligibility application form and submit to his/her authorized high school representative for verification of the Regent Scholar curriculum and academic requirements for the program. After obtaining the authorized signature, students should submit the application form directly to the financial aid office at his/her university or college. In addition to the completed application, students must submit an official high school transcript and a copy of his/her ACT or SAT score report. Complete application packages must be submitted to institutional representatives no later than September 1st for those students seeking initial enrollment during the fall term, and no later than January 15th for those seeking initial enrollment during the spring term.
