Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a graduating high school senior who has been accepted to a four-year college or university.
  4. Must be a community leader who exemplifies the commitment, ideals and courage that Anne Frank represents today. Examples of such activities include: acting as a spokesperson for tolerance; on a daily basis, having the courage to be bridge builders and peacemakers; creating programs that address intolerance, violence prevention and conflict resolution; standing up against intolerance by leading or participating in community-based organizations.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Graduating high school seniors who are community leaders and have been accepted to a four-year college are eligible for this award. The award recognizes students who exemplify the commitment, ideals and courage that Anne Frank represents today.

Application requirements for the Spirit of Anne Frank Award are:

  • Essay
  • Application form
  • Recommendation letters (2)
Additional Information: The Center hopes to discourage applicants from sending a list of clubs they have joined, volunteer hours they have worked, or recycled college essays. Recent winners have started nonprofits, helped change federal law, turned their lives around through a commitment to education, written a book about a social issue, and challenged prejudice as a community leader. Acceptable supporting materials include photocopies of photographs, newspapers, magazine or online articles, awards and letters of recognition. Applicant SHOULD NOT SEND high school transcripts, CDs, DVDs. The Anne Frank Center USA will not return any supporting materials.

Award Amount: One award of $10,000 and one award of $5,000. All scholarships are provided annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,500.

Applications are available online from the Anne Frank Center USA website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit a 1,000-word essay in pdf describing contribution(s) he/she has made to his/her community and how his/her goals are inspired by Anne Frank. The essay should relate a single personal experience that demonstrates a commitment to social justice through peace initiatives, by taking a stand against discrimination of any type, reaching out to underserved community members, or working to bring diverse people together. It is strongly recommend that the applicant read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and include in his/her essay themes from the diary related to his/her own life experience. The applicant must also submit two letters of recommendation. Applications must be submitted by the deadline.
