Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 30 awards offered annually. This number may vary, as funds are dependent on the number of contributions made to the Texas AFL-CIO Scholarship Fund each year. The Texas AFL-CIO guarantees 20 scholarships a year, but has awarded 30 scholarships to high school seniors for the past several years. In addition, two college students will receive continuing scholarships of $1,000, but the pool for these awards is limited to past winners. The continuing scholarship program places a heavy emphasis on extracurricular activities demonstrating social or political activism.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a member or the child of a member of a local union that is affiliated with the Texas AFL-CIO and the local Central Labor Council.
  4. Must be a resident of Texas.
  5. Must be a high school senior who is planning to attend a university, college or technical institute in the upcoming summer or fall term.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Interview
  • Photo (headshot)
Additional Information: The Texas AFL-CIO Scholarship is based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, performance on the test and personal interviews, and financial need.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available on the Texas AFL-CIO website. In addition to the completed application, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her high school transcripts and a head shot photograph for processing. The applicant must also take a test on organized labor based on materials that the Texas AFL-CIO provides the applicant, and he/she must sit for interviews with officers of the Central Labor Council near his/her home. The application must be postmarked no later than the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
