The Bego Fund

Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually. One award will be given to a high school student and one will be given to a college student.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Preference will be given to a student who is from an immigrant family and is either a U.S. resident, naturalized citizen or a first-generation U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be a resident of New Jersey, New York or Pennsylvania.
  4. Must be a high school senior or older at time of application and be enrolled or planning to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program.

Description: The Bego Fund provides scholarship to high school seniors who are residents of New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania. To apply, each student must submit official transcripts, a resume, a one-page statement outlining his/her goals, and contact information for one reference.

Additional Information: This scholarship is awarded in memory of Begonia Alvarez Fernandez. 'Bego,' as she was known to her friends, was the daughter of immigrants and was the first in her family to receive an undergraduate degree. She also earned two graduate degrees and worked as a school social worker and psychologist all while raising her own family. Her dedication to her family, the kids she helped and her love of learning are an inspiration to everyone she touched. In addition to her family and friends, Bego treasured two things in life: kids and education. This scholarship seeks to honor her memory and her values. Scholarships awarded will be made payable jointly to the recipient and the recipient's educational institution.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, for high school students. $4,000 annually for college students. Both awards are non-renewable. Previous recipients will be eligible to re-apply if a 'B' average is maintained during the award period.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications are available online from the Community Foundation of New Jersey website. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit an official transcript from his/her current school; a resume outlining work experience, activities and achievements; a one-page statement of his/her career goals and reasons for having these goals; a color picture of himself/herself; and the name and phone number of one character reference who is not a relative. All applications must be submitted online by the deadline date. Only fully completed applications by the application deadline will be considered.
