Cancer for College

Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students or international students studying in the U.S.
  2. Must be enrolled in or planning to enroll in an undergraduate or graduate program during the year of the award.
  3. Must be a cancer survivor.
  4. Must reside in or attend college or university in Southern California.
  5. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in a field related to sports.

Description: The Cherry Hawk Scholarship is provided annually to cancer survivors who reside in or attend college/university in Southern California. Additional preference is given to students who are majoring in a field related to sports.

  • Recommendation letter
  • Copy of prior year tax return
  • Confirmation of cancer diagnosis
Additional Information: The Cherry Hawk Scholarship is provided annually in honor of Taylor "The Hawk" Richardson, Gene "Cherry" Ward, and all of the "Fallen Hawks" who are remembered for their legacy of joy and love of sports. To be eligible, students must be residents of or attending a college/university in Southern California and must be current or former cancer patients. Additional preference will be given to students who are pursuing sports-related majors such as Sports Information, Sports Medicine, Sports Management, Sports Marketing, Sports Journalism, or any Communications degree with a personal emphasis on sports reporting.

Award Amount: Scholarships are usually awarded in the amount of $5,000 per year. Amounts may be reduced accordingly if the student has a lesser amount of unmet financial need.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $16,000.
