Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. Last year, 28 awards were given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be pursuing higher education in the field of natural resources.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be Native American or Native Alaskan.
  5. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student.

Description: Native American or Native Alaskan students who are high school seniors or current undergraduates are eligible for this award. Students must be pursuing higher education in the field of natural resources.

Application requirements for the Truman D. Picard Scholarship Program are:

Additional Information: To honor Truman D. Picard, the ITC established a scholarship program in his name. Mr. Picard served on the ITC Board of Directors from 1982 to 1985. The ITC has cooperative financial aid agreements with the University of Washington and Salish Kootenai College. Recipients of the ITC Truman Picard Scholarship are eligible to receive additional scholarships, including tuition waivers, if they attend these institutions. Additional information is available from the ITC and the institutions.

Award Amount: Graduating high school seniors receive $2,000 annually, non-renewable. Current college students receive $2,500 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,250.

Scholarship information is available on the Intertribal Timber Council (ITC) website by clicking on the 'Scholarships' link. There is no application form for this award. The student must provide the following materials in order to be considered: a two-page letter of application demonstrating interest in natural resources, commitment to education, community and culture, and financial need (must includ student's name, phone number, email address, and permanent mailing address); a resume; three signed letters of reference on letterhead and dated within the last six months; evidence of validated enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or native Alaska corporation, as established by the U. S. government (a photocopy of his/her enrollment card or Certificate of Indian Blood accepted); and transcripts. Graduating high school seniors must also provide proof of acceptance to an institution of higher education. Current college students must provide proof of their declared major. The student must demonstrate financial need by submitting a copy of his/her most recent SAR (Student Aid Report) with his/her letter of application, or having the SAR sent to the ITC office. The SAR is generated by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. All application information must be submitted to the address provided by close of business (5:00 p.m. PST) on the deadline date. Faxed and emailed applications are accepted, but an original copy of the application must also be sent by postal mail; this copy must be postmarked by the deadline date.
