Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards will vary each year according to the number of eligible students.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
  2. Must plan to attend the University of Iowa.
  3. Must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credits per term).
  4. Must be an incoming first-year college student.
  5. Must contribute to a diverse community at the University of Iowa upon enrollment. Eligibility criteria may include one or more of the following: race/ethnic background; socioeconomic factors; whether the student is a first-generation college student (whose parents have not graduated from college); or participation in a federally funded Upward Bound program.
  6. This award is for U.S. students.

Description: This award is available for U.S students who are planning to attend the University of Iowa as first-year students. Students must contribute to a diverse learning environment at the University of Iowa. Awards are based on academic achievement.

Application requirements for the University of Iowa Advantage Iowa Award are:

  • Application form
  • SAT/ACT scores
  • $40 app. fee
Additional Information: The Advantage Iowa Awards is available to students whose enrollment will contribute to a diverse learning environment. The award is based on merit (test scores, grade point average, class rank).

Award Amount: The award ranges from $2,000 to $8,000. All awards are renewable for up to three additional years or until completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first, provided the student maintains continuous full-time enrollment and a cumulative UI grade point average of 2.5 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Students must apply for admission to University of Iowa (UI) to be considered for this award. An additional scholarship application is not required. Admissions information is available online on the UI website at admissions.uiowa.edu/apply/first-year-student-application-process . In addition to the online application, the student must also pay the non-refundable $40 application fee and have ACT and/or SAT scores sent to UI directly from the testing agency. Students must apply by the admissions deadline of March 1 for scholarship consideration.
