Number of Awards & Eligibility: Five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a descendant of a member in good standing with the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union Local 745, with preference given to descendants of retired members.
  3. Must be a resident of Hawaii.
  4. Must plan to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a full-time student (12 credits per semester for undergraduate; 9 credits per semester for graduate).
  5. Must demonstrate academic achievement with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  7. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate and graduate award.

Description: This scholarship is available for Hawaii undergraduate and graduate students who are descendants of a member in good standing with the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union Local 745, with preference given to descendants of retired members. Students must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

Additional Information: This scholarship honors the memory of Walter Kupau, former head of the Carpenter's Union. Under Kupau's guidance, Local 745 became the fifth-largest union in the state and took an active role in local community issues, politics and public service. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and good moral character. Recipients will be notified after the scholarship selection committees meet, which could be any time between May and August.

Award Amount: Approximately $1,000 annually, non-renewable. Students may reapply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Online application forms are available on the Hawai'i Community Foundation (HCF) website. The student should visit the HCF website for detailed instructions on how to complete the online application. In addition to the online application form, the student must submit the following supporting materials: the printed confirmation page that is generated after applying online; a typed, double-spaced personal statement of two to three pages answering the questions listed online; an official copy of his/her most recent transcript; and a copy of his/her SAR (Student Aid Report). The SAR is obtained by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. For this scholarship, proof that the student is a descendent of a member in good standing of the Hawai'i Carpenter's Union Local 745 is required. The student must submit the name and social security of the member, as well as the member's relationship to him/her. Note: Students WILL NOT be able to submit their application until all required supporting documents are electronically attached to the application.
