Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to five awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must enroll full time.
  4. Must present evidence of being enrolled/matriculated, in the upcoming fall semester, as an undergraduate or graduate student, at an accredited two- or four-year college/university.
  5. Must pursue a career in landscape design/golf course architecture; golf course turf grass management/golf course superintendent; professional golf management, club professional, or sports journalism with a special interest in golf; OR be an outstanding amateur college/university golfer.
  6. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who are amateur golfers or plan to pursue a golf-oriented career are eligible for this award.

Additional Information: The following criteria will be used in the evaluation and judging of all applicants: academic record; involvement in golf-related interests and activities; career goals (not applicable for students who are applying in the category of "amateur golfer"); extracurricular activities, including volunteer work with student/community organizations; participation in sports and community affairs, including jobs held, special interests, and hobbies.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually. This scholarship may be used for any legitimate educational expense. Awards are renewable subject to re-application, including a letter of recommendation from at least one of the student's professors, and evidence of maintaining a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Past winners will be reviewed by the scholarship screening panel using the same criteria applied to all other applicants.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from the Walter J. Travis Memorial Society website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit proof of acceptance or enrollment in college for the upcoming fall semester (major must be specified); transcripts; a brief essay explaining why Walter Travis would recommend him/her for this scholarship awarded in his name; and letters of recommendation. Please note: For amateur golfer applicants, one of the letters of recommendation must be from his/her high school or college golf coach or golf instructor. Applications and supporting materials must be postmarked by the deadline date.
