Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In 2015, there were 1,242 scholarships awarded.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a Washington state resident as defined in statute. The relevant statute can be found online at apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=28B.15.012.
  2. Must be pursuing an eligible high-demand major in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), or health care. A list of eligible majors is available online at www.waopportunityscholarship.org/document.doc?id=675.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average through fall semester or quarter 2017 of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  4. Must have a family income (adjusted gross income plus all untaxed income) less than the amount listed by family size on the chart located on the scholarship website at www.waopportunityscholarship.org/file/application-documents/Family-Income.pdf. Please note: Unless the student qualified to submit the FAFSA as an independent student, the family income amounts are those reported by the student's parent(s) on his/her FAFSA.
  5. Must plan to attend an eligible Washington state college or university. A list of eligible institutions is available online at the provider website.
  6. Must be a high school senior, or a college freshman or sophomore at the time of application. Please note: College students who will have earned 90 or more quarter credits or 60 or more semester credits at the start of fall term 2016 are not eligible. Running Start, AP, IB, and transfer credits that the student's college has accepted count toward that total.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  8. This award is for U.S. students.
  9. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED from a Washington state high school or institution by June 2018.

Description: This award is available to Washington undergraduate students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in high employer demand fields including science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and health care. Students must have a grade point average of 2.75 of higher and meet family income maximums.

Additional Information: The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) supports low- and middle-income students pursuing eligible high-demand majors in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) or health care and encourages recipients to work in Washington once they complete their degrees. Students must apply for federal education tax credits if eligible. Students must be pursuing a first bachelor's degree. Students will be notified of scholarship selection status in May via the email address provided on the scholarship application.

Award Amount: $2,500 per academic year (three quarters or two semesters), renewable for up to two additional academic years depending on how many earned college credits were listed on the recipient's official college transcript at the time of application. Once the recipient has earned 90 quarter hours/60 semester hours and been admitted into an eligible major, he/she must submit additional documentation to have the scholarship increased to $5,000 for that academic year. Students who do not submit the documentation forfeit the scholarship. Once the recipient has earned 135 quarter hours/90 semester hours and are continuing to pursue an eligible major, he/she must submit additional documentation to have the scholarship increased to $7,500 for that academic year. Students who do not submit the documentation forfeit the scholarship. Students who need to attend a fifth year of college can receive $5,000. There will be no need to complete any additional requirements to receive $5000, except for completing the annual renewal/update form.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $17,500.

Applications are available from the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) website. In addition to a completed online application, the student must submit official high school and/or college transcripts by mail to the address provided. The student should click the 'Checklist' link on the WSOS website to determine what type of transcript he/she is required to submit. If the student took the GED, he/she must submit official GED scores. Students must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA), as appropriate for his/her immigration status. Those who are eligible to submit the FAFSA must do so. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The WASFA is available online at readysetgrad.org/wasfa. The online application must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. PST on Feb. 28.
