Number of Awards & Eligibility: Ten awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be the member of, or have a parent who is a member of, a union affiliated with the Chicago Federation of Labor.
  3. Must be a high school senior at the time of application.
  4. Must reside in or graduate from a high school in the greater Chicago area.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available for U.S. high school seniors who are a member or the child of a member of an affiliated local union of the Chicago Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. Students must plan to graduate from a Chicago-area high school in the year of competition.

Application requirements for the William A. Lee Scholarship are:

Additional Information: These awards are a memorial to William A. Lee who was president of the federation from 1946 until 1984. The selection of the academic competition will be made by an outside judge. The decision of the judge is final. The presentation of the awards will be made at a reception. Winners, their parents and representatives of the unions involved will be invited to the presentation. Winners must be present to receive the award.

Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

Applications are information are available on the Chicago Federation of Labor website. A complete entry (for those who choose to compete in the academic judging) will include the application form, high school transcripts, scores on ACT or SAT tests, certification of union membership of the applicant or the applicant's parent, and other required materials. A complete entry (for those who choose to compete in the random drawing) will include the application form, certification of union membership of the applicant or the applicant's parent, the essay response, and certification of graduation signed by the applicant's high school principal. The application and all supporting materials must be submitted to the address provided and postmarked by the deadline date.
