Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. All eligible applicants will be considered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be accepted to an accredited postsecondary education program: university, college, technical school, or certification program.
  4. Must be the spouse or dependent (child or step-child) of an eligible military member.
  5. Must base eligibility on one of the following: any service member who has been killed or disabled with a service-connected disability from the VA (the disability rating must be at least 10 percent); a veteran who died from any cause while such service-connected disability was in existence; any service member who is currently classified as a POW or MIA; a service member missing in action or captured in line of duty by a hostile force; a service member forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power; a service member who has received a Purple Heart Medal (may be active duty).
  6. Must be 24 years of age or younger if a dependent.
  7. Must be unmarried if a dependent.

Description: This scholarship is available to U.S. students who have been accepted for enrollment in an accredited postsecondary educational program. Students must be the spouse or dependent of a military member who has been killed or disabled, is classified as a POW or MIA, or received a Purple Heart.

Additional Information: Applicants will be notified via email regarding award decisions by the end of June each year. Recipients must maintain a semester grade point average of 2.0 or higher. If a recipient achieves less than a 2.0 grade point average for two consecutive semesters at any time while receiving a Folds of Honor scholarship, the scholarship may be revoked and the recipient may not be eligible to reapply. Eligibility would be returned only after raising semester grades to a 2.0 grade point average for two consecutive semesters. Students must be enrolled in at least one course at their college or university to apply. Students are not required to maintain full-time enrollment.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $5,000 annually, based on the student's reported unmet need for educational expenses for the academic year. Scholarships are disbursed in equal installments for fall and spring semesters. Awards are non-renewable; however, recipients may reapply each year in which they are eligible. Scholarships are to be used to subsidize the costs of tuition, school books, fees, on-campus or off-campus housing, on-campus board, special tools and equipment required for coursework, school-approved tutoring, and any other required educational expenses that are unmet. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the school, and the standing policies and procedures of the school will guide the application of the funds to the student's educational expenses. Funds will not be released directly to students.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,750.

Applications are available online on the Folds of Honor website. The applicant must upload documents proving the status of the military member under whose service he/she is applying (e.g., DD214, DD1300, Certificate of Retirement, M.E.B. or P.E.B., Certificate of Death, VA Disability Rating, Purple Heart Certificate). The applicant must also upload a document proving his/her dependent/spouse status (e.g., DEERS Report, Dependent Military ID, etc.) and proof of school enrollment. Issues with uploading documents should be addressed by calling Folds of Honor at the number listed. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on the deadline date.
