In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Massachusetts.
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  4. Must be enrolled in a public or private secondary school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  5. Must enroll as a full-time undergraduate college student in an eligible program as defined by the institution after high school graduation.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  7. Must have overcome major adversity such as physical abuse, mental abuse, or catastrophic illness.
  8. Must be a high school sophomore or junior at time of nomination.
  9. Must demonstrate high financial need.

Description: This award is available to Massachusetts high school sophomores or juniors who demonstrate difficult personal circumstances and high financial need. Students must enroll full time at a Massachusetts college or university and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Additional Information: The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program is a state-supported program whose mission includes providing educational opportunities to Commonwealth students who demonstrate academic promise and desire to attend post-secondary institutions. The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program was established in 1972 by the Massachusetts State Legislature as an early identification program to recruit students in the 10th and 11th grades whose socio-economic backgrounds and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to persevere and attain educational goals. Students must demonstrate difficult personal circumstances, high financial need, and strong academic promise to continue his/her education beyond high school at a college or university.

Award Amount: The award will cover up to 50 percent of the student's financial need. Awards are renewable for a maximum of four years, and are subject to annual appropriations from the Massachusetts Legislature. Awards may be used for college-related costs only. Such costs may include tuition, fees, room, and board.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $11,403.

Applications are available online from the Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance website. Please note: Students must be nominated by a sponsoring school or agency to be eligible to apply. The nominator must complete one section of the application and provide a statement of nomination. In addition to the completed application, each student must submit the following materials: a signed autobiographical essay of two single-spaced pages addressing his/her leadership qualities, obstacles overcome/challenges, achievements, and community outreach; a supporting financial statement, to include his/her and his/her parents' federal and state 2014 income tax returns (additional/other documents accepted in certain situations); two letters of recommendation; and an original official high school transcript. Application materials must be assembled in the aforementioned order. The complete application packet must be mailed to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
