Number of Awards & Eligibility: 240 awards offered annually: one first prize; five second prizes; 10 third prizes; 45 finalist prizes; 175 semifinalist prizes. Additional awards are available for students in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be in the eighth, ninth or tenth grade at time of entry.

Description: U.S. and international students who are currently enrolled in eighth, ninth or tenth grade are eligible to apply for this award. To enter, students must write an essay of 600 to 1,200 words on one of the three topics listed on the Ayn Rand Institute website.

Application requirements for the Ayn Rand – Anthem Essay Contest are:

Additional Information: Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of 'Anthem'. Employees of the Ayn Rand Institute, its board of directors and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest. Past first-place winners are not eligible for this contest. Winners, finalists, semifinalists and all other participants will be notified via email and/or by mail by August.

Award Amount: Awards are for cash prizes in the amounts of: first prize, $2,000; second prizes, $250; third prizes, $100; finalist prizes, $25 All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $72.

This is an essay contest; there is not an application for this award. To enter, students must write an essay of 600 to 1,200 words on one of the three topics listed on the Ayn Rand Institute website. Essays should be typewritten and double-spaced (one entry per student) and must be solely the work of the entrant. Essays may be mailed to the address provided, or submitted using the institute's online form. To avoid disqualification, mailed essays must include a cover sheet that is stapled to the essay, and includes the following: name and address, email address (if available), the name and address of the student's high school (if home-schooled, write 'home-schooled'), topic selected, current grade level, and (if applicable) the name of the teacher who assigned the essay (if the student is completing it for classroom credit). To submit online, click the link 'Submit your essay online' below the 'Anthem-Find out how to enter' headline. All entries become the property of the Ayn Rand Institute and will not be returned. All essays must be postmarked by the deadline date or submitted online no later than 11:59 p.m. PST by the deadline date.
