  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.
  3. Must be a high school sophomore, junior or senior attending a public, parochial, or private high school (including accredited home schools) during the contest year.

Description: This award is available to U.S. citizens who are high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students must submit a 800- to 1,200-word essay addressing the questions for this year's essay contest.

Additional Information: Only one entry per student is permitted each year. Students are encouraged to review the website for more information on the number and type of references needed to complete the essay correctly. The essay will be judged on the following criteria: historical accuracy, clarity of thought, organization and proven topic, grammar and spelling, and documentation. The first-place national winner is prohibited from participating in following years' contests.

Award Amount: The national awards are distributed as follows: the first-place winner will receive $5,000, a winning recognition plaque, airfare and a one night hotel for two at the annual congress; the second-place winner will receive $2,500; and the third-place winner will receive $1,000. All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,500.

The applicant must submit an essay on an event, person, philosophy, or ideal associated with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. Students must source at least five references with the minimum of three being published book sources to allow for verification of sources if necessary. References from encyclopedias or Internet sites will be accepted, but are not considered as part of the three published book sources. If there are no book sources (i.e. all are from encyclopedias or internet sources), the essay will be disqualified. The essay must have four parts: a title page, an essay, a bibliography (works cited), and the contestant's biography (one page). The bibliography and contestant's biography must be submitted on separate pages. The essay must be written in English; be a minimum of 800 to a maximum of 1,200 words (excluding the title page, footnotes, bibliography, and biography); and be double-spaced on white bond paper using a computer, word processor, or typewriter. Graphics are not permitted. The applicant must send his/her essay to his/her National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) local chapter or state society. Only one entry per student is permitted per contest year. If the state does not participate, then the essay may be submitted to the at-large judge listed on the NSSAR website. The original copy of the essay must be submitted. Duplicate copies will not be accepted. Entries must be postmarked on or before the deadline date unless otherwise stated by the applicant's chapter/state.
