Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in major courses.
  2. Must be African American.
  3. Must be majoring in teaching education in a core area (Elementary, SPED, Health/PE, Secondary English, Sciences, Mathematics, History/Social Sciences, or Foreign Language).
  4. Must be in the final year of study for an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Description: The African American Teaching Fellows (AATF) is available for teachers working towards licensure in core areas (Elementary, SPED, Health/PE, Secondary English, Sciences, Mathematics, History/Social Sciences, or Foreign Language). Each applicant must have at least a GPA of 2.5- 3.0 in education courses or in the academic major.

  • Official Transcript.
Additional Information: The African American Teaching Fellows (AATF) program recruits, supports, develops and retains African American teachers to serve in either school division in Charlottesville, Virginia. Students must currently be enrolled in an accredited teacher education program. To be eligible you must apply no earlier than the student's last year in a Teacher Education program (4th, 5th year, or last year of graduate school). You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, OR currently enrolled in a graduate program; OR be a recent graduate, not more than 2 years post-grad, planning to enroll in a graduate program. Applicants must be working towards licensure in core areas (Elementary, SPED, Health/PE, Secondary English, Sciences, Mathematics, History/Social Sciences, or Foreign Language.) Each applicant must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in education courses or in the academic major. The qualifications for becoming a Teaching Fellow are stringent. A committee of local educators and AATF board members screens and interviews applicants. The committee considers a number of criteria, including GPA, a writing sample, extracurricular activities, references, and an interview.

Award Amount: Students can qualify for up to $15,000 over the course of three years to be used towards tuition and other fees for teacher licensure. Awards are renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,000.
