Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of qualified applicants. Merit award consideration is very competitive and the number of awards available is limited.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international students.
  2. Must plan to enroll as a full-time student.
  3. Must be an incoming first-time freshman.
  4. Must plan to attend American University in Washington, D.C.

Application requirements for the American University International Student Merit Award are:

  • $70 app. fee
  • Proof of English proficiency & finances
Additional Information: American University's merit awards for international students are partial, not full, scholarships. They are highly competitive and based on a combination of outstanding academic achievement, excellent communication skills in English, leadership, volunteerism, and community service.

Award Amount: $6,000 to $25,000 annually, renewable for up to three additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $62,000.

Scholarship information is available from the American University (AU) website. Students must apply for admission to AU to be considered for this award. A separate scholarship application is not required. Students must use the Common Application (www.commonapp.org) to apply for admission. In addition to the Common Application, the student must submit the following materials: a non-refundable $70 application fee; the Common Application Writing Supplement; academic records for grades 9-12 with official transcripts and certified English translations, if applicable; two academic letters of recommendation; proof of English proficiency (via the TOEFL or IELTS); a completed AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form showing at least U.S.$59,780 for first year of study and living expenses; and a bank letter showing at least U.S.$59,780 for first year of study and living expenses. Students must apply for admission for the upcoming fall (August) semester for scholarship consideration. The fall semester application deadline is Jan. 15.
