Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually and is dependent on funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a graduating college senior, college graduate OR current graduate student.
  4. Must have a grade point average equivalent to a "B" or better.
  5. Must enroll in two or more classes each semester.
  6. Must demonstrate sound community leadership through volunteer work in the community or at college/university.
  7. Must be a current resident of affordable housing, meaning the resident family must have been income qualified to move onto the property or receiving rental assistance through a recognized Federal housing program (Section 8, Rent Supplement, Rental Assistance Payments, or Low Income Housing Tax Credit program).

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Additional Information: This scholarship is awarded in honor of a past NLHA President and a true Section 8 advocate, Neil Churchill. Neil worked at HUD early in his career and went on to become a developer, bond underwriter and FHA specialist. Before his untimely death in 2003, he was a Vice President with GMAC. Neil devoted his entire career to affordable housing, and this award is provided to continue that legacy.

Award Amount: $2,000 to $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Applications are available online from the National Leased Housing Association (NHLA) website. To be considered for this award, students must first register for an account on the NHLA scholarship application portal. Applicants must then select just one scholarship he or she is eligible for and complete the corresponding online application form. In addition to the short informational sections of the online application, students may also be asked to upload supporting documents such as transcripts, financial information forms, or letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online no later than the deadline date.
