Number of Awards & Eligibility: Four or more awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be 18 years of age or older at time of application.
  4. Must be an individual who has been impacted by crime, either as the child of an inmate or victimized by crime (either himself/herself or a member of his/her immediate family).
  5. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher or provide documentation explaining circumstances if his/her grade point average is lower than 2.5.
  6. Must be a graduating high school senior planning to enroll in a two- or four-year program of study.

Additional Information: WriteAPrisoner.com is pleased to announce the establishment of a very important scholarship program to benefit the children of inmates and the children who have been victimized by crime (either themselves or a member of their immediate family.). While the fund's primary goal has always been to reduce recidivism, it also recognizes the importance of prevention – preventing citizens from a life of crime and incarceration. The scholarship program emphasizes this aspect of prevention. Education is a critical step toward a crime-free life. Scholarship applications must be submitted between March 1 and June 1. Scholarship recipients will be notified by July 1. Awards will be mailed by August 1. Scholarships submitted before March 1 or after June 1 will not be considered

Award Amount: $250 or more annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from the Writeaprisoner.com website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following materials: his/her most recent official transcript (high school or college); a recommendation letter from a teacher or guidance counselor dated within the last three months; verifiable documentation that he/she has been impacted by crime (reviewed on a case-by-case basis); and a one-page, 12-point font, typewritten essay including a brief explanation regarding his/her eligibility for the scholarship, as well as a thorough explanation of his/her educational goals and how he/she plans to use education for the greater good of society. If the applicant has a grade point average lower than 2.5, he/she must also submit a letter of explanation. If the applicant has a grade point average higher than a 2.5, he/she has the option to submit a letter outlining extracurricular activities, employment, etc. The pages included in the application packet should not be stapled; they may be submitted loosely or paper clipped. The applicant's full name should appear on every page of the packet. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. Scholarship applications must be mailed to the address provided, and must be submitted between March 1 and June 1.
