Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards varies annually. Last year there were 12 awards offered.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  2. Must hold a doctorate classified as a research degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., M.D.) or an M.F.A at the time of application.
  3. Must be female.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.

Additional Information: The American Fellowships program has been in existence since 1888, making it the oldest noninstitutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. The program provides fellowships for women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship is to increase the number of women in tenure-track faculty positions and to promote equality for women in higher education. This fellowship is designed to assist the candidate in obtaining tenure and further promotions by enabling her to spend a year pursuing independent research. All awards are evaluated based on scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. Notification of decision e-mails are sent to each applicant in April.

Award Amount: $30,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $30,000.

Additional information can be found on the American Association of University Women (AAUW) website. In addition to the completed application, the student must also submit: three letters of recommendation from advisers, colleagues, or others well acquainted with her work; official copy of her transcript; an institutional certification form; an institutional letter, if required; a current C.V. or resume; narratives based on the topics listed on the application; a proposed budget; and a $45 filing fee paid through PayPal. All application materials are due by 11:59 p.m. CST on the deadline date.
