Number of Awards & Eligibility: 40 awards offered annually. The awards are distributed among the participating schools. The student should check the application to see how many awards are available at his/her school.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Alabama.
  3. Must have a parent or grandparent who was/is a veteran of WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict, the Beirut/Grenada Emergency, the Panama Emergency, or Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  5. Must plan to attend one of the following Alabama institutions: University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, or Huntsville campuses; Auburn University, Auburn or Montgomery campuses; Jacksonville State University; Troy State University; University of Montevallo; University of North Alabama - Florence; University of South Alabama - Mobile; University of West Alabama - Livingston; Alabama State University - Montgomery; or Alabama A&M University.
  6. Must be the son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter of a veteran.
  7. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  8. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is available for undergraduate Alabama students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and attend an eligible Alabama institution. Applicants must have a parent or grandparent who was/is a veteran of WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict, the Beirut/Grenada Emergency, the Panama Emergency, or Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

Additional Information: Evaluation of each application will be conducted by the American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Committee. Each application shall be reviewed and scored on a point basis in relation to each item listed on the official application form. Scholarships, once awarded, cannot be transferred from one campus to another.

Award Amount: $850 annually, non-renewable. This award is to be used for books, tuition, and/or board costs. Students may reapply each year for a total of four years. To reapply, the student must have a 3.0 grade point average and a completed application on file with the American Legion Auxiliary.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $850.

Applications are available by contacting the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Alabama using the information provided at the website. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a copy of his/her parent's or grandparent's service record; proof of relationship with the service veteran (e.g., birth certificate); his/her high school or college transcript; three letters of recommendation, one from a person at his/her school, one from church, and one from a friend or neighbor (all recommenders must be non-related); and a small photograph. If the student wants to have his/her additional application materials returned, he/she should enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage. *Please note: Applications must be completed in the student's own handwriting. The application and all supplemental materials must be sent together in one package to the address provided and must be received by the deadline date.
