Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. and international students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must be a member of Phi Theta Kappa.
  4. Must have 45 or more credit hours at the time of application.
  5. Must plan to transfer to American University in Washington, D.C.
  6. Must be a full-time student.

Description: This award is for U.S. and international undergraduate students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa and planning to transfer to American University in Washington, D.C.

Application requirements for the American University Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • $70 app. fee
Additional Information: Phi Theta Kappa membership alone does not guarantee a scholarship. Academic credentials must be competitive within the applicant pool.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, renewable for an additional year by maintaining a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

To apply, students must apply for admission to American University. No separate scholarship application is required. To apply for admission, the student must complete either the Common Application or Universal College Application. The student must also submit the following materials: a $70 non-refundable application fee; official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended; one letter of recommendation (must be from from a Phi Theta Kapp faculty advisor for this scholarship); an explanation of interruption of study if he/she has been out of school for more than a semester; and an official high school transcript if he/she has fewer than 24 transferable college credits. Please note: To be considered for this scholarship, students must identify Phi Theta Kappa membership on their admission application. Admission applications must be submitted by March 1 for the fall or Nov. 1 for the spring.
