Number of Awards & Eligibility: Fifteen awards offered annually. Three awards will be given in each division.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be the daughter, step-daughter, son, or step-son, grandson, granddaughter, step-grandson or step-granddaughter of a veteran who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion.
  4. Must have a parent, step-parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent who is currently an active member of the U.S. military or one who actively served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Granada Conflict, Lebanon Conflict, Panama Conflict, or Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
  5. Must have completed 50 hours of community service during high school years.
  6. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. students who are current high school seniors and have completed 50 or more hours of community service during high school are eligible for this award. Students must be the sons or daughters of veterans who served in the armed forces during the eligiblity dates for membership in the American Legion. The parent must have served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Granada Conflict, Panama Conflict, or Desert Storm/Desert Shield.

Application requirements for the Children of Warriors National President Scholarship are:

Additional Information: No unit may enter more than one candidate in the department competition. Each department is restricted to submitting one candidate to the divisional competition. Previous National President's Scholarship recipients are not eligible for further consideration.

Award Amount: Fifteen awards provided annually. All scholarships are awarded on one-time basis and are non-renewable. The scholarship must be used within 24 months of the date the winner receives notification by national headquarters. Half of the award will be paid directly to the school for the first semester upon notification from the school that the student has registered. The balance of the award will be paid to the school upon notification from the school that the student has registered for the second semester.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications can be found on the American Legion Auxiliary website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must submit: four letters of recommendation (one letter from either the principal or guidance counselor of the school from which the applicant will graduate, including the size of class and the student's position in the class, and the student's cumulative grade point average; one letter from a clergyman/clergywoman of the applicant's choice; and two letters from adult citizens, other than relatives, attesting to the applicant's character in regard to conduct, citizenship, and leadership); an original essay consisting of no more than 1,000 words (typed, double-spaced) entitled 'Pass It On – How Can I Be a Leader in My Community'; a letter from a recipient organization verifying 50 hours of voluntary service; a certified transcript or photocopy of the applicant's high school grades; a copy of ACT or SAT test scores; and a brief statement of the military service of parent or parents, including the branch of service and dates of service, or a photocopy of parent's or parents' discharge papers. Students must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the deadline date. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Applicants must present the completed application to the local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President on or before the deadline date. The winning entry for each unit shall be certified by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit President and mailed to the department secretary on or before March 15.
