In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must be legally blind and registered with the State Commission for the Blind.
  4. Must be a resident of Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Vermont or Washington, D.C.
  5. Must attend college in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Vermont or Washington, D.C.
  6. Must be a graduating high school senior at time of application.

Description: This award is available for U.S. high school seniors who are residents of and plan to attend college in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Vermont or Washington, D.C. Students must be legally blind and registered with the State Commission for the Blind.

Application requirements for the Lighthouse International College-Bound Award are:

  • Recommendation letters (2)
  • Official Transcript
Additional Information: This award is designed to reward excellence, recognize accomplishments and to help students who are blind or partially sighted achieve their career goals.

Award Amount: $10,000 annually, non-renwable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $10,000.

Applications are available on the Lighthouse International website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a personal essay, not exceeding 500 words, summarizing the applicant's academic achievement and career goals; documentation of current legal blindness verifying the candidate's vision impairment (the statement may come from an ophthalmologist, optometrist or state rehabilitation agency); documentation of the applicant's academic record and current school status (including his/her most recent transcripts and letter of acceptance into his/her chosen school or study program, when available); and letters of recommendation from two individuals other than family members, including one academic or career reference, and one personal reference. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
