  4. Must be a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.
  5. Must plan to attend Macalester College in Minnesota.

Description: This award is available to U.S. high school seniors who have designated Macalester College, MN as their first choice college. The student must be a National Merit Scholarship finalist.

Application requirements for the Macalester College National Merit Scholarship are:

  • Application form
  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • Essays (2)
  • SAT/ACT scores
Additional Information: The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, in conjunction with Macalester College, awards merit scholarships to selected academically talented high school seniors for undergraduate studies at Macalester. Prospective freshmen students who have been awarded College-Sponsored Finalist standing, and who have listed the Macalester as their "first choice" school on the NMSC Scholarship Application, are eligible to receive a National Merit Scholarship at the MC. Award Amount: $5,000 annually, renewable for an additional three years. The award is offered in two parts: a $2,000 National Merit Scholarship sponsored by Macalester, and a $3,000 DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $20,000.

To apply, students must apply for admission to Macalester College. No separate scholarship application is required. Interested students must contact Macalester College Admissions by phone, e-mail, mail, or website to request an application packet, or apply online from the college website. Students must also submit a School Report Form (counselor evaluation); official transcripts from all high schools attended; two Teacher Recommendation Forms, completed by two teachers who have taught the student in a core class (English, social studies, foreign language, math or science); official SAT and/or ACT reports; a Mid-Year School Report; and two essays (250 or more each) addressing the questions listed in the application. For Scholarship consideration, students must apply for admission by January 15. Admission applications are accepted on a rolling basis with an early decision deadline of November 15 and January 1 and a regular decision deadline of January 15.
