Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
  3. Must be currently enrolled at one of the following South Dakota public universities: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, South Dakota State University, or the University of South Dakota.
  4. Must be classified by his/her university as a junior at the time that funds are received (first payment in fall semester).
  5. Must be a resident of South Dakota.
  6. Must be a legal U.S. resident.

Description: This award is for South Dakota students who are currently attending a public university in South Dakota. The student must be classified by the university as a junior at the time funding is received and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Additional Information: Marlin R. Scarborough was a former president of the South Dakota Board of Regents. This endowed scholarship was established with gifts funds from family and friends as a Memorial. This award is funded by the SDBOR and administered through the financial aid office at a participating South Dakota college or university. The Regent's Scholarship Committee will evaluate the nominees and make recommendations to the Board. The emphasis on selecting the awardee for this scholarship is based on academic and leadership potential. Recipients of the scholarship will be approved by the Board between March and April. Selected recipients will be notified by the institution's financial aid office.

Award Amount: $1,500 annually, non-renewable. The award is allocated in $750 installments for the fall and spring semesters.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,500.

Additional information is available from the South Dakota Board of Regents (SDBOR) website. Scholarship applications are available from the SDBOR website and financial aid offices at eligible South Dakota colleges. In addition to a complete application, students must also submit an essay explaining their leadership, academic, and community service qualities. Deadlines may vary by institution. Each participating South Dakota public university will nominate one student for this award. The application form and essay must be submitted to the university's financial aid office by the due date set by the university.
