Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen/permanent resident.
  3. Must specialize in the field of library youth services.
  4. Must attend an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). A list of ALA-accredited library schools is available at www.ala.org/accreditedprograms/directory/search.
  5. Must pursue an MLS/MLIS/MIS degree. The student may not have earned more than 12 semester hours toward his/her degree by June 1 of the award year.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: U.S. and Canadian citizens/permanent residents who will have completed no more than 12 hours toward an MLS/MLIS degree prior to June 1 of the award year are eligible for this award. Students must attend an ALA-accredited library school and plan to enter the field of library youth services.

Additional Information: Factors considered for selection include academic excellence, leadership qualities, and evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship. Achievement in these areas may best be demonstrated by statements indicating the nature of library and other experience, by professional references, and by the personal statement included in the online application. Recipients will be contacted by phone after June 1. All other applicants will be notified by mail after July 1.

Award Amount: $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in October for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online on the American Library Association (ALA) website. Scholarship information is available by clicking the 'Scholarships by Specialty or Practice Area' link, then clicking the 'Service to Children, Young Adults and Teens' link. Please note: The student need only complete one application to apply for all scholarships for which he/she is eligible. The following components are required for all ALA scholarships: a completed online application (includes a personal statement); contact information for three professional references, who will be sent instructions for completion of the online reference form; and official academic transcripts from the institution where the student received his/her bachelor's degree and the institution where he/she is currently enrolled. Transcripts may be sent to ALA directly from the institution or be submitted by the student in an unopened envelope. Only official, sealed transcripts will be accepted. All application materials must be submitted online by the deadline.
