Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately three awards are offered this year.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must show proof of English language fluency (unless they have a completed undergraduate degree from a country where English is not the main language).
  2. Must have commitment to service and leadership within a community.
  3. Must select which partner school they want to pursue their degree at.

Description: The Obama Foundation Scholars Program is available for student who have a proven commitment to service and leadership within a community, region or country outside the United States. A demonstrated commitment to return to these communities following their completion of the program is also required.

Application requirements for the Obama Foundation Scholars Program are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Personal statement
Additional Information: The Obama Foundation Scholars Program seeks to support dynamic, collaborative, rising leaders. Candidates are chosen from around the world and take part in an innovative one-year academic and leadership experience. This new program was designed with the University of Chicago at the Harris School of Public Policy. Scholars will receive a Master of Arts degree focused on International Development and Policy and will get hands-on skills training working alongside the Foundation team. Obama Foundation Scholars at Columbia University will participate in Columbia World Projects, a new initiative in which faculty and researchers from Columbia will partner with governments, nonprofits, the private sector, and intergovernmental organizations to create tangible solutions to real-world issues. To be eligible (Columbia) you need to have a proven commitment to service and leadership within a community, region or country outside the United States. Plus a demonstrated commitment to return to these communities following their completion of the program and apply their enhanced training, skills and connections on a long-term basis for the benefit of these communities.

Award Amount: Scholars will receive all tuition and fees for up to four courses at Columbia University, monthly stipend to assist with living expenses in New York City,furnished studio apartment, air travel to and from home country, basic medical, dental and life insurance for the duration of the program.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
