Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually based on the number of eligible applicants and funding levels.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  3. Must be a legal resident of South Carolina.
  4. Must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and rank in the top six percent of the high school class OR have a grade point average of 4.0 or higher with an SAT score of 1400 or higher or an ACT score of 32 or higher.
  5. Must have an SAT score of 1200 or higher or an ACT score of 27 or higher.
  6. Must not have been convicted of any felonies or any alcohol or drug-related misdemeanor offenses.
  7. Must be accepted to an eligible public or private four-year institution in South Carolina.
  8. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This scholarship is available for South Carolina resident high school seniors who are planning to attend an eligible South Carolina institution. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and an SAT score of 1200 or higher or an ACT score of 27 or higher, and rank in the top six percent of their class; students may also qualify with a grade point average of 4.0 or higher and an SAT score of 1400 or higher or an ACT score of 32 or higher.

Additional Information: The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program is a merit-based scholarship program administered by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (SCHE). Its purpose is to recognize the most academically talented high school seniors in South Carolina; to encourage academically talented students to attend college in the state; and to help retain minority students who might otherwise pursue studies outside the state.

Award Amount: Freshman may receive up to $6,700 during the first year of college enrollment. Sophomores, juniors and seniors may receive up to $7,500 per year. Half of the Scholarship is awarded in the fall term and half in the spring term. Assuming continued eligibility, Palmetto Fellows may receive scholarship funding for a maximum of eight consecutive terms of full-time study toward the first bachelor’s degree or ten consecutive terms of full-time study toward the first approved five-year bachelor’s degreeRecipients may also be eligible to receive a Scholarship Enhancement. For Enhancement eligibility, Palmetto Fellows must declare a major in an approved math or science program and must also successfully complete at least fourteen credit hours of instruction in mathematics or life and physical science or a combination of both by the end of the first academic year. Eligible students may receive up to $10,000 (combined funds from the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship and the Scholarship Enhancement) per year beginning with their second/sophomore year of college enrollment. Students may receive Enhancement funding for a maximum of six full-time terms of study toward their first bachelor's degree at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $29,200.

Additional information about this scholarship is available online on the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (SCCHE) website. The SCCHE provides application materials to all high schools and home school associations in the state during the fall each year. Students enrolled in an out-of-state high school must contact the SCCHE regarding the application process. Guidance counselors/school representatives will identify eligible students and provide them with the scholarship application. Home-schooled students must apply through their home school association. The Early Award deadline is April 15 and the Late Award deadline is June 30 of the year of high school graduation.
