Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be accepted to the University of North Florida.
  3. Must be admitted into a program within the UNF College of Education and Human Services. Preference will be given to students who have been admitted into the deaf education program.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Preference will be given to juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

Description: This award is available for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who attend the University of North Florida and are admitted to the College of Education and Human Services. Preference will be given to junior, senior, and graduate students in the deaf education program.

Application requirements for the UNF Elizabeth and Irwin Zekaria Deaf Education Endowed Scholarship/Fellowship are:

Additional Information: Undergraduate applicants must demonstrate financial need. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee. Students will be notified of their selection status in April or May. Recipients will be recognized at an awards reception in the fall. Students must attend the awards reception as a condition of receiving the scholarship or fellowship. Recipients must meet the following responsibilities: consent to release grades to the Division of Institutional Advancement for the purpose of reporting to the donor; comply with all University regulations, rules, and codes of conduct governing students on campus; and remain in good standing as a student. Undergraduate students must also enroll full time (12 or more credit hours) each semester and earn at least 24 academic credits by the end of each academic year; graduate students must also enroll part time (6 or more credit hours) each semester and earn at least 18 academic credits by the end of each academic year.

Award Amount: $4,000 annually. This scholarship will be disbursed in two equal installments in fall and in the spring. Current recipients may re-apply and must meet the criteria listed online at www.unf.edu/coehs/scholarships/list/Elizabeth_and_Irwin_Zekaria.aspx. No student will be eligible for more than four semesters of scholarship/fellowship support.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $8,000.

The application deadline date has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected to remain the same as last year. The deadline date shown here is tentative based on last year's date. Please check back in January for a refreshed application deadline date. Applications are available online from the University of North Florida (UNF) College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) website. The student need only submit one application for all UNF COEHS scholarships for which he/she wishes to be considered. In addition to the completed application, the student must submit the following: a typed, double-spaced essay of no more than three pages (in 11-point font) describing how he/she will benefit from the scholarship; two professional letters of recommendation that are signed, printed on official letterhead, and dated within 12 months of the application; and a resume or curriculum vitae of four pages or less that includes educational qualifications, work experience, teaching experience, leadership positions held and professional activities. Please note: To be considered for this scholarship, the student must explain within his/her essay why he/she chose deaf education as a major. In addition, undergraduate students must submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. The application and all required documentation must be submitted together as attachments in one email. Applications must be submitted by email by 5 p.m. ET on the deadline date. Only electronic applications will be considered.
