Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two or more awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Maine.
  3. Must attend the University of Maine.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be a resident of Bethel Maine, or Oxford County, Maine.

Description: This scholarship is available for current undergraduate students attending the University of Maine. Students must be residents of Bethel Maine, or the county of Oxford in Maine.

Additional Information: The University of Maine's residency scholarships are intended to attract and retain top academic achievers from diverse areas of Maine and surrounding states who seek intellectual stimulation and opportunities for personal development. This award, in honor of William Bingham, 2nd, is for students who reside in the town of Bethel Maine, or Oxford County, Maine. Each year, an additional scholarship will be provided by this fund in honor of Payson Smith to local residents who are pursuing a degree in education at the University of Maine. The scholarship committee will select recipients and determine award amounts based on consultation with the headmaster of The Gould Academy in Bethel.

Award Amount: $1,000 to $3,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Applications for University of Maine residency-based scholarships must be accompanied by a certification of town residency that includes a town clerk's official seal. Upon receipt of the residency certification and information release form, the University of Maine will provide additional documentation regarding financial need and academic records. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but for full consideration, should be submitted by the priority deadline.
