Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  3. Must have been a resident of West Virginia for 12 or more months prior to date of application.
  4. Must enroll as a full-time student.
  5. Must attend an approved educational institution located in West Virginia or Pennsylvania.
  6. Must be a high school graduate or have earned a TASC (former GED) or high school equivalent certificate and enroll as an undergraduate student.

Additional Information: The West Virginia Higher Education Grant is a need-based financial aid program designed to ensure West Virginia students with financial need are given an opportunity to pursue postsecondary education. All applicants must meet the following criteria: demonstrate an established level of financial need; demonstrate academic promise; and have not previously earned a bachelor's degree. Awards generally may be used in conjunction with other forms of state, federal, and institutional financial aid.

Award Amount: The award amount each year varies based on a number of factors including the financial need of applicants and available funding. The maximum award amount for the 2017-2018 academic year was $2,700. The grant may be renewed until the student's course of study is completed, but may not exceed an additional three academic years beyond the initial award.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,110.

Program information is available from the College Foundation of West Virgina (CFWV) website. To apply, students must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at high school guidance offices, and at college financial aid offices. Students are advised to file the 2019-2020 FAFSA as soon as possible after Oct. 1, 2018. The FAFSA must be received by April 15, 2019.
