Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of assistanships offered varies annually. Approximately 450 to 500 assistantships will be offered per semester.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Must plan to attend Western Illinois University.
  4. Must be a full-time student (at least nine semester hours).
  5. Must be a college senior or older student planning to attend graduate school.

Description: International and U.S. graduate students attending Western Illinois University are eligible for this award. Students must be enrolled full time and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: Graduate assistantships are academic merit-based award programs which provide students with work opportunities in a job closely related to their academic field of study. Students with full-time assistantships are required to work up to 20 hours per week or teach up to 6 semester hours per semester and will receive a monthly stipend and waiver of tuition.

Award Amount: The current full-time monthly stipend and maximum required work hours of each category are listed below. The monthly stipends listed are minimums. Please note, assistants will be granted an increase in pay at the same time the faculty receive an increase. Graduate assistants will receive $7,544 annually ($943 per month) and work 20 hours per week. Research assistants will receive $7,544 annually ($943 per month) and work 20 hours per week. Teaching assistant will receive $8,688 ($1,086 per month) and teach up to 6 semester hours each semester. Full paychecks for fall contracts with semester-long employment dates will be issued in October, November, December, and January. There are five paychecks issued to those with spring semester-long contracts: 1/2 check in February; full checks in March, April and May; and 1/2 check in June. Payday is the first of the month unless that day is a weekend or holiday, in which case payday will be the weekday before the first. Assistants are required to participate in direct deposit of wages using the financial institution of their choice. Graduate assistants receive a waiver of tuition (upon receipt of a signed contract) for the period of appointment plus a maximum of one summer session adjacent to (preceding or following) the employment period. If eligible, the summer tuition waiver is automatically applied for the summer following the end of the contract period; students must notify the Graduate School at the time of signing a fall contract if they choose to use it the preceding summer. The waiver does not include insurance costs or student fees. Tuition waivers may be revoked if the assistant does not fulfill at least two months of the regular contract. Awards are renewable for an additional year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,088.

Applications are available online from the Western Illinois University website. In addition to the completed application, each applicant must submit a statement of his/her personal goals in graduate study (as described on the application), and three letters of recommendation (not necessarily in addition to those submitted for admission to the academic program). The application and all other documents can be sent to the address printed at the bottom of the application. Priority consideration will be given to those students who submit all materials by the deadline date.
