In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Texas.
  3. Must be a dependent child of an individual who died as a result of injury or illness related to service in the U.S. military or the National Guard.
  4. Must attend a public college or university in Texas.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older at time of application.

Description: This award is available to Texas resident undergraduate students who are dependent children of an individual who died as a result of injury or illness related to service in the U.S. military or the National Guard. Applicants must attend a public college or university in Texas.

Additional Information: The Exemption for Orphans of Texas Members of the U.S. Armed Forces or National Guard program provides financial assistance to students whose parent died as a result of illness or injury related to service in the U.S. Military or the National Guard.

Award Amount: Exemption from the payment of dues, fees, and charges, including fees for correspondence courses but excluding property deposit fees, student service fees, and any fees or charges for lodging, board, or clothing. Awards are renewable providing the recipient makes satisfactory academic progress in a degree, certificate, or continuing education program, as determined by the institution The amount of the exemption may not exceed the amount of tuition the person would be charged as a Texas resident for the number of semester credit hours for which the person enrolls, not to exceed 12 semester credit hours. Awards may not be used to pay tuition for continuing education classes for which the college receives no state tax support.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,770.
