Description: This contest is open to anyone who submits an essay of 3,000 words or less about the role of leadership in defining sea power in the modern world.

Additional Information: The Naval Institute sponsors annual essay and photo contests to stimulate discussion on key issues affecting the sea services. The submitted essay must be an original analytical and/or interpretive work and written solely by the applicant. All previously published essays are ineligible.

Award Amount: $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 will be awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place contest winners, respectively. All winners will also receive a medal and a one-year membership in the Naval Institue. All awards are made on an annual basis and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

This is an essay contest. Application information is available on the Naval Institute website. To enter, the student must submit an original essay on the subject of leadership as it relates to the goals of the Naval Institute: 'To advance professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to national defense.' The submission must also reference the themes of the current year's contest. Essays must adhere to the following guidelines: a maximum of 3,000 words; typewritten; double-spaced; and on standard-size paper that is approximately 8.5" x 11" (and, if available, submit an IBM-compatible disk with software specified). Applicants are encouraged to submit photographic and/or graphic elements to support their essay. Prints must be a minimum size of 5" x 7". If submitting a transparency, prints must be in 35mm format (no glass transparencies) and digital images must be no less than 300 dpi. Applications must be submitted via email. Essays must be as an attachment to [email protected], and "Leadership Essay Contest Submission" must appear in the subject line of the email. The applicant must include his/her name, address, telephone number, title of the essay, and a biography of 50 words or less in the body of the email. Since the essays are judged anonymously, the essay cover page should include the title and word count (excluding footnotes) only; the applicant's name must not appear anywhere on the text. Applicants preferring to submit their entries via postal mail must supply two copies of the essay and an attached cover letter containing the same contact information as required for electronic submission. All entries must be postmarked by the deadline date and sent to the address provided.
