How Do You Get a ROTC Scholarship?

The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, or ROTC, offers scholarships for college. ROTC scholarships are merit awards and go to students who commit to serving in the military. There are also many other military scholarships for military spouses, their children and veterans.

ROTC programs train college students for future military services in the US Army, Air Force or Navy. The scholarships are available at colleges that partner with the ROTC around the nation.

How Can You Qualify for a ROTC Scholarship?

To qualify for an ROTC scholarship, you must meet certain standards. You must be a US citizen. You must also have a high school diploma and be 17 years old. These vary by military branch who may assess your financial need.

Also, the ROTC looks for academic excellence and physical fitness. Students must meet a specific range of GPA, SAT or ACT scores.

Many scholarships go to students who plan to major in a field that is useful in the military too. Ones like engineering, nursing, computer science, and foreign languages.

How Does a Scholarship Work?

The ROTC partners with colleges that take part in their programs. If you accept an ROTC scholarship, you must sign a contract.

The contract has two parts. First, you must complete while in school, the other when you graduate.

When you are in school as a cadet, you take part in ROTC courses along with other college courses. The ROTC courses discuss the history and operations of the military branch you joined.

When you graduate, depending on the branch you signed with, you must serve in the military.

  • Army scholarship holders serve 8 years (four years of active duty and four years in the reserves)
  • Navy scholarship holders serve four to five years of active duty
  • Air Force scholarship holders serve four to six years of active duty and ten years for cadets trained as pilots

But, if you get a scholarship as a freshman, you can leave the ROTC at the end of your freshman year. Then, the ROTC will cover its share of your freshman expenses with no further obligation on your part.

Why Consider Scholarships for ROTC Programs?

These scholarships can be useful if your goal is to earn a college degree. ROTC scholarships could cover tuition, fees, books and other student necessities.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average cost of tuition, fees, room, and board were about $17,237 at public college. In comparison, total college costs at private nonprofit schools were $44,551 and $25,431 at private for profit schools.

Many scholarships are generous and tend to cover the costs for full tuition, fees, and textbooks for four years of college. Plus, they may give a monthly stipend for personal expenses.

Army ROTC, for instance, offers two, three and four year scholarships, which pay full tuition and fees. Additionally, they offer a separate allowance for books, plus a monthly stipend of up to $5,000 a year.
