Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of scholarships varies and is dependent on the amount of money raised by the foundation annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior or older to apply for this undergraduate award. Please note: This award is for students seeking their first bachelor's degree.
  3. Must be the child or legal dependent of a uniformed services member (officers, enlisted personnel, National Guard members, and reservists).
  4. The student must have a parent or legal guardian who was a uniformed services member (officers, enlisted personnel, National Guard members, and reservists) and died in active service.
  5. Must attend an accredited college or university full-time.
  6. Must be under the age of 24. If the applicant served in a uniformed service before completing college, his/her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he/she served, for a maximum of five years.

Additional Information: Prompted by the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) established the American Patriot Scholarship program to help the sons and daughters of uniformed services personnel (officers, enlisted personnel, National Guard members, and reservists) who have died in active service. If the applicant themselves served in a uniformed service before completing college, their maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he/she served, for a maximum of five years. *Please Note: Military academy cadets are not eligible for the American Patriot Scholarship program. Semifinalists for the American Patriot Scholarship program will be notified on the MOAA website and by emails only. All administrative costs of The Scholarship Fund of MOAA will be borne by MOAA, and 100 percent of donations will go directly to the program to educate the sons and daughters of military personnel.

Award Amount: The amount of this award is dependent upon donations. The amount awarded is $7,000 per scholarship.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $7,000.

Additional information may be found on the MOAA website by selecting the Scholarships and Grants category near the bottom of the page. The application must be submitted online by noon EST on the deadline date.
