Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must enroll full time at an accredited educational/technical institution.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must be 26 years of age or younger.
  5. Must be the dependent child of a soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, or guardsman who was killed or permanently disabled (100 percent rating) as a result of an operational mission or training accident, OR a dependent child of a soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, or guardsman who is currently classified as a POW or MIA.
  6. Must have a parent who has served in the military.
  7. Must be a high school senior or currently enrolled undergraduate student at time of application.

Additional Information: The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund was the vision of Freedom Alliance founders Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC (Ret.) and the late Lt. Gen. Edward Bronars, USMC. It exists to honor the bravery and sacrifice of U.S. military personnel who have been killed or permanently disabled in an operational mission or training exercise. Freedom Alliance will notify students of their individual decision by mail. If the student is approved for a scholarship, he/she will then be required to complete, with his/her school's financial aid office, three enrollment verification forms.

Award Amount: The amount of each award varies annually. Award amounts are based on the student's individual circumstances. Once enrollment is verified, the scholarship check will be mailed directly to recipient's school.This award is renewable if the recipient shows proof of satisfactory academic progress (maintaining a grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) and that he/she is still enrolled full time as an undergraduate at an accredited educational/technical institution. Current scholarship recipients can submit their renewal information on the Freedom Alliance website.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,250.

Applications are available on the Freedom Alliance (FA) website. The application form must be completed online. After completion and submission, the student will be instructed to print a copy of the application and sign it. This copy must be included in the student's application packet. In addition to the copy of the online application, the student must also submit the following in his/her application packet: a copy of his/her government-issued photo identification card (his/her military ID is preferred); a copy of his/her parent's certificate of death (Form DD1300), his/her parent's certificate of disability (showing a 100 percent VA disability rating), or documentation of his/her parent's POW or MIA classification; a 500-word essay addressing the topic listed on the application; an official transcript from high school and from all post-high school educational institutions (must be in a sealed envelope and cannot be sent separately); and a photo of the applicant from the shoulders up, no smaller than 2" x 2" (the applicant must write his/her name on the back of the photo and include a note if it must be returned). The applicant also has the option to include a photo of his/her parent. All information must be submitted in one envelope at one time only. It is imperative that all questions be completed, and the certification signed and dated by the applicant and a parent. Application materials must be submitted online by the deadline date.
