Number of Awards & Eligibility: Approximately 500 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. This is an undergraduate award.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  4. Must have a parent who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during specified periods of war or national emergency and, as a result of service, died or suffered a 40 percent or more disability, is classified as missing in action (MIA), or was a prisoner of war (POW).
  5. Must meet the New York state residency requirement.
  6. Must be a high school senior or older.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is available to U.S. students whose parent(s) served in the U.S. Armed Forces during specified periods of war or national emergency and, as a result of service, either died, suffered a 40% or more disability, was classified as missing in action, or was a prisoner of war. The veteran must currently be a New York State resident or have been a New York State resident at the time of death. Students must be attending or planning to attend an eligible postsecondary institution in New York.

Application requirements for the NYS Regents Awards for Children of Deceased and Disabled Veterans are:

  • FAFSA
  • Application form
  • TAP app./Payment form
Additional Information: Students whose parent(s) was the recipient of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, or the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal for participation in operations in Lebanon, Grenada, or Panama and students who were born with spina bifida whose parent is a Vietnam Veteran who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in Indochina between 12/22/61 - 05/07/75 may also be eligible. Award Amount: Up to $450 annually, renewable for up to three years. Recipients must re-apply each year.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $391.

Applications are available from the New York State Higher Education Service Corporation (HESC) website. To apply, the student must first complete the Children of Veterans Award Web Supplement. Be sure to print the Web Supplement confirmation, sign it, and submit it, along with the required documentation, according to the instructions. In addition to a complete application, current New York State residents must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and TAP on the Web application. FAFSA and TAP applications and instructions are available at www.HESC.org. The FAFSA and TAP must be completed as soon as possible after January 1st and before June 30 of the academic year for which for which aid is sought.
