Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  3. Must plan to attend an accredited flight school, institution, or college.
  4. Must have honorably served in the U.S. armed forces.
  5. Must be pursuing aviation/aeronautical education or training.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This scholarship is open to military veterans who are pursuing aviation/aeronautical education or training. Candidates will be evaluated on achievements, teamwork, leadership skills, motivation, and community service involvement.

Additional Information: Candidates will be evaluated on achievements, teamwork, leadership skills, motivation, and community service involvement. All scholarships, unless otherwise noted, will be awarded at the Annual International Women in Aviation Conference. Attendance at the conference is not required to receive a scholarship, but it is encouraged.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications for the American Airlines Veteran's Initiative Scholarship are available on the Women in Aviation, International (WAI) website. A complete application packet must include three stapled sets of the following (one original and two copies): a completed application form; two recommendation letters of one page each; a 500-word typed, descriptive essay; a professional resume; and copies of all aviation licenses and medical certificates, and the last three pages of the applicant's pilot logbook, if applicable. A separate application packet must be submitted for each scholarship for which the student wishes to apply. Students may apply for a maximum of two scholarships per year. Application packets must be submitted online by the deadline date.
