Still considered a large minority group in the United States, African-American students pursuing higher education can find abundant scholarship opportunities to help them achieve their dreams. Some of the scholarships in this category require students to be first-generation minority students, other simply require that students demonstrate financial need. Regardless of the specific requirements, African-American students are still underrepresented at many colleges and universities. AMS Minority Scholarship

Minority U.S. students entering their freshman year of college in the fall who are planning to major in an atmospheric science, oceanography, or hydrology are eligible to apply for this award. Marine biology is not an eligible field of study.

This award is available for undergraduate minority students in California who plan to pursue a career in education.

Lagrant Foundation Graduate Scholarship

This award is available for U.S. graduate students with a grade point average of 3.2 or higher who are of either African American, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic, or Native American heritage. The applicant must major in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing or advertising.

Lagrant Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship

This award is available for U.S. undergraduates with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher who are of either African, Asian/Pacific, Hispanic, or Native American heritage. The applicant must major in a field of study that has an emphasis on public relations, marketing or advertising; or must minor in communications with desire to pursue a career in public relations, marketing or advertising.

U.S. high school senior and undergraduate minority students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and plan to enroll full time are eligible for this award. Students must be planning to pursue a career in the chemical sciences and majoring in an appropriate chemical science field.

Actuarial Diversity Scholarship

This scholarship is available for U.S. and international high school seniors, undergraduates, and graduate students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (emphasis on math and actuarial courses); high school seniors must also have a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 600.
