Still considered a large minority group in the United States, African-American students pursuing higher education can find abundant scholarship opportunities to help them achieve their dreams. Some of the scholarships in this category require students to be first-generation minority students, other simply require that students demonstrate financial need. Regardless of the specific requirements, African-American students are still underrepresented at many colleges and universities. University of Iowa Advantage Iowa Award

This award is available for U.S students who are planning to attend the University of Iowa as first-year students. Students must contribute to a diverse learning environment at the University of Iowa. Awards are based on academic achievement.

RMHC/African American Future Achievers Scholarship

U.S. high school seniors who have at least one parent of African American or Black Caribbean heritage and are less than 21 years of age are eligible for this scholarship. Students must reside within the boundaries of the geographic area of a local RMHC chapter.

RMHC/African American Future Achievers Scholarship of Southern California

This scholarship is available for U.S. high school seniors who have at least one parent of African American heritage. Students must reside within the Southern California counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Ventura; and have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher.

UNF Minority Community College Transfer Scholarship

This scholarship is available for Florida students who are planning to transfer to the University of North Florida and are members of a minority group. Awarding is based on financial need and/or merit and other select criteria.

Minot State Cultural Diversity Award

This scholarship is available for minority students who are attending Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.25 or higher.

Montgomery Summer Research Diversity Fellowship

This award is available for U.S. students who are currently enrolled as college sophomores or juniors and will add diversity to the field of law and social science (e.g., ethnic minority, disabled, LGBTQ, etc.). To be eligible, the applicant must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be working toward a degree in the social sciences or humanities.

Minority Teachers of Illinois (MTI) Scholarship

This scholarship is available for Illinois resident undergraduate and graduate students who are African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American or Native American origin and planning to become preschool, elementary or secondary school teachers. Students must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Minority Medical Student Elective Fellowship in HIV Psychiatry Fellowship

This award is available for minority medical students who are planning to pursue a career related to HIV psychiatry and counseling.

This award is available for minority students who are currently enrolled in a fitness or nutrition program at an accredited California college or university. The applicant must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and have completed at least 50 credit hours toward his/her degree at the time of application.

CANFit Culinary Arts Undergraduate Scholarship

This award is available for students who are enrolled in a California culinary arts school. Students must be of African-American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian-American, Pacific Islander or Latino/Hispanic ethnicity.

CANFit Graduate Scholarship

This award is available for minority students currently enrolled in a graduate program for nutrition, public health nutrition, physical education, or an American Dietetic Association-approved pre-professional practice program at an accredited California college or university. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and have completed 12 to 15 units of graduate course work at the time of application.

Rosewood Family Scholarship Program

This award is available for U.S. undergraduate students who are considered a minority and planning to attend an eligible college or university in Florida. Priority will be given to direct descendants of African-American Rosewood families affected by the events of January 1923.
