Number of Awards & Eligibility: 20 awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  2. This award is for racially and ethnically diverse students.
  3. Must have achieved a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale as an undergraduate.
  4. Must be starting his/her first year of law school.
  5. This award is for U.S. students.

Additional Information: The American Bar Association provides this scholarship in an effort to advance diversity within the legal profession. Since the program began, more than 350 students from across the United States have been awarded the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship. Selection of awards will favor strong legal arguments as demonstrated in the essay.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually will be distributed to each recipient for each year of law school, renewable for up to two additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $15,000.

The purpose of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to and attend law school and to provide financial assistance to ensure that these students have the opportunity to attend law school for three years. To apply, the applicant must submit a completed application, a personal statement of up to 1,000 words, unofficial transcript from the undergraduate school, and two letters of recommendation through the online application form. All submissions must be received by the deadline date.
