Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually, but can range from one to three awards.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be of Japanese ancestry or part-Japanese ancestry OR be a member of the Japanese American Citizens League. Preference may be given to Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League members or dependents.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  4. Must reside in Ventura County, California and graduate from a high school in Ventura County.
  5. Must be a high school senior at time of application.

Description: This award is available for U.S. high school seniors who reside in Ventura County, California and plan to graduate from a high school in Ventura County. Students must be of Japanese ancestry or part-Japanese ancestry OR be a member of the Japanese American Citizens League. Preference may be given to Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League members or dependents.

Application requirements for the Ventura County JACL Scholarship are:

  • Recommendation letter
  • Official Transcript
  • Personal statement
Additional Information: The applicant must either be of Japanese ancestry, or be a member of JACL. The applicant must be planning to attend a two- or four-year college, university, or trade school in the upcoming fall semester.

Award Amount: $750 to $1,000 annually, non-renewable. The amount of each award depends on the number of scholarships awarded.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $875.

Applications are available on the Ventura County Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) website. Please note: There are two forms that need to be downloaded from the website as part of the application: Part 1 and Part 2. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, employer, coach, or community leader; an official high school transcript; and a personal statement (preferrably no longer than one page in length). All application materials must be postmarked by the deadline.
