Number of Awards & Eligibility: Eleven awards offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be entering the third or fourth year of medical school.
  3. Must plan to pursue a career in southern California.
  4. Must demonstrate a commitment to culturally and linguistically responsive medicine.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Description: This award is for U.S. medical students who have worked toward cultural and linguistic representation in healthcare. Applicants must be entering their third or fourth year of medical school and must plan to pursue a career in southern California.

Additional Information: Dr. Goldsmith was chair of the Kaiser Permanente National Diversity Council and established the SCPMG Physician Diversity Advisory Committee. In addition, his leadership and support was instrumental in the development of the Culturally Responsive Care (CRC) Initiative, which emphasizes the delivery of culturally responsive care to Kaiser Permanente's diverse patient population. This initiative aims to ensure that clinicians are prepared to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of patients and that they are made aware of the epidemiologic incidence of disease among different racial, ethnic and cultural groups. The Oliver Goldsmith, MD Scholarship for the Promotion and Advancement of Culturally Responsive Care honors second- or third-year medical/osteopathic students who have demonstrated commitment to the advancement of culturally responsive care (CRC) through community service, clinical volunteering, or research. Each awardee will participate in a mentoring program with a KP clinician and complete a four-to-six week clinical rotation at a KP facility.

Award Amount: $5,000 annually, non-renewable. Students will also participate in a mentoring program and complete a clinical rotation at a Kaiser facility.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $55,000.

Applications and information are available on the Kaiser Permanente Residency website at the address provided. In addition to the completed online application form, students must submit the following items: an essay pertaining to involvement in leadership, research or community involvement; a letter from Medical/Osteopathic school stating current academic standing; Medical/Osteopathic school transcripts; and two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a medical/osteopathic school professor/clinician, and one must attest to the applicant's experience in diversity & culturally responsive care activities. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online and received by the deadline date.
