Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered each year varies depending on funding.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a minority student of a race that has been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students.
  3. Must pursue a career in the atmospheric sciences, oceanography, or hydrology. Marine biology is not an eligible field of study.
  4. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  5. Must be entering his/her freshman year of college in the upcoming fall semester.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: Minority U.S. students entering their freshman year of college in the fall who are planning to major in an atmospheric science, oceanography, or hydrology are eligible to apply for this award. Marine biology is not an eligible field of study.

Application requirements for the AMS Minority Scholarship are:

  • Essay
  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • ACT/SAT scores
Additional Information: The AMS/Industry Minority Scholarships will award scholarships to minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Funding for the scholarships is provided by donations made by members to the AMS Giving Program. The announcement of winners is expected to be made in early May. Students eligible to apply for the AMS Minority Scholarship Program may also apply to the AMS Freshman Scholarship Program but can only accept one scholarship if selected for both.

Award Amount: The $6,000 two-year scholarship is for $3000 per year during freshman and sophomore years (second-year funding depends on successful completion of the first academic year).  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $6,000.

Applications must be mailed to the address provided and must be postmarked by the deadline date. Supporting materials may arrive no later than two weeks after the application deadline date.
