Number of Awards & Eligibility: One or two new awards funded annually for a total of four to six active fellowships.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a graduate student working toward a doctoral degree at the time of application.
  2. This award is for U.S. students.
  3. Must be a minority student.
  4. Must be majoring in physiology.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Additional Information: The goal of the Porter Physiology Development Program is to encourage diversity among students pursuing full-time studies toward the Ph.D. (or D.Sc.) in the physiological sciences and to encourage their participation in the American Physiological Society.

Award Amount: $28,300 annually, renewable for up to two additional years.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $84,900.

Applications and information are available at the American Physiology Society website. In addition to the online application, students must submit the following items: transcripts from all higher education institutions attended; a letter of acceptance if Ph.D. work has not yet begun; a biographical sketch of the applicant; contact information for an advisor or program coordinator; a research proposal adhering to the guidelines listed in the informational page; a research proposal and biographical sketch of the advisor or coordinator overseeing the student's graduate work; and two confidential letters of recommendation. All applications and supporting documents must be received by the deadline.
