Number of Awards & Eligibility: Two or more awards provided annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must have completed at least one full year of an undergraduate program.
  3. Must be majoring in journalism.
  4. Must be a minority student.
  5. Must be a resident of Los Angeles, Orange or Ventura counties.

Description: This award is available for minority students from Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program and majoring in journalism. Applicants must have completed at least one full year of academic classes to be eligible for this scholarship.

Additional Information: Each year, The Society of Professional Journalists Los Angeles awards scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. The Ken Inouye Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of Ken Inouye, a 22-year-old cameraman for the International News Service, who was killed aboard an Army aircraft while covering the Korean War.

Award Amount: $500 to $1,000 annually, renewable for up to an additional three years if the student maintains satisfactory academic progress.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,000.

Applications and information about this award are available on the Society of Professional Journalists, Los Angeles Chapter at the address provided above. In addition to a completed application form, students must submit the following items: An essay response to the prompt listed on the application; a current resume; examples of the applicant's journalistic work; and a standard resume detailing the student's work and educational experiences. All applications and supporting documents must be mailed or emailed to the address provided, and received by the deadline date. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.
